Founded in 2003, Elwyn Opportunities School provides an academic learning environment integrated with positive behavior supports to best meet the unique needs of each student. 

The goal of our balanced educational and therapeutic program is to move students toward academic progress, offering the necessary supports to learn, grow, and achieve their goals.

We realize each student must feel physically and emotionally safe while in our care. Understanding no two students are alike, we work with each student on an individual basis. Our program offers students proactive strategies to promote connections and create relationships in order to successfully return to their home school setting. 

Our comprehensive program includes:

• Experienced staff, trained with the skills necessary to prevent or minimize challenging behavior and maintain the safety and dignity of our students.
• Small classes, typically eight to nine students per classroom.
• Daily Social Skills Classes, where students will learn vital coping skills, social skills, and practice growth mindset.
• Weekly Group Sessions, conducted by behavior health professionals.
• Positive Behavior Support, each student has an individualized plan and goals.
• Daily Points Sheet, allows student to track progress and understand areas that need improvement.

We partner with school districts to ensure each student achieves his or her maximum potential.

Process:

District personnel may identify a student who is unsuccessful in their current academic placement. If a student’s IEP team decides that an out of district placement is necessary, the district will send referrals to local schools.

Steps:

Upon receiving the referral, we will contact you to schedule an intake meeting and tour.

A decision on acceptance will be made by the school, and the parent. When this decision is made, we will work with the school to discuss transportation and the start date.

It is our priority to ensure a smooth transition for all. When your child starts at Elwyn, we will work with your child to ensure all appropriate accommodations are made, and will stay in contact with the school district and family on a regular basis.

Students will be evaluated upon starting and placed into the appropriate level courses based on their needs, strengths, and weaknesses.

We work to understand the unique learning needs of each child, and offer students learning opportunities to fit their individual needs and interest.

Differentiated instruction and customized learning styles are devised and implemented for each student to increase relevance and impact.

Our students work with a multidisciplinary team of teachers, therapists, behavior analysts, counselors and support staff all who utilize curriculums and best practices aligned with state standards.

Our comprehensive program incorporates positive behavior supports, scientifically-based research practices and interventions in an inclusive, general education setting.

Positive student relationships are fundamental to success. When students feel supported, they’re more likely to engage in learning and improve academically. We know that when our students feel confident, and empowered, they have fewer behavioral problems.

We avoid ‘negative’ requests. For example, we don’t tell our students what we don’t want to see, we let them know what behaviors we do want to see.

Our focus is to collaborate with the student, not control the student. Our instruction emphasizes choices, and evaluates good and bad consequences to certain behaviors. We provide encouragement and context to learn the choice that will lead to a good consequence, or a positive outcome.

Students can earn incentives or daily “points” in order to engage in frequent, repetitive behaviors with positive outcomes.

Points accumulate to earn school dollars and can be used at the end of the week at the school store.

Students can accumulate points to earn additional privileges such as technology time during the school day, a spot in “Honor’s Lunch,” and various community outings.
